Nikon Coolpix S630

Reprinted with permission from HotTechBuys - >Nikon Coolpix S630

Nikon Coolpix S630The sleek little Nikon Coolpix S630 is a great option for any kind of user, taking finely detailed photos or high quality movies. It may look great from a distance but in your hands it is surprisingly small. In fact despite its high performance and wide array of features, it is housed in one of the smallest body of any similar camera.

At 12 megapixels, every photo comes out so sharp you can enlarge parts or crop others without fear of losing any picture quality. The 7x Zoom-Nikkor lens gives you the ultimate shooting flexibility by allowing you to shoot images both far away and as close as 60 cm from the lens. Flowers, sunsets, or children, every subject comes out crisp and beautiful. The most common problem the average person has is blurry images, but with electronic 4-way VR image stabilization, a shaking hand won’t ruin an entire photo, even if you are shooting in a low-light environment. Also, when shooting in darker spots, the Coolpix employs an ISO well beyond its peers (ISO 6400), letting you get brighter photos even with less natural light.

Many of the hardest parts of photographing your friends have been solved by Nikon cameras. For example, their smart face-priority AF searches the frame for faces, keeping the focus on eyes and smiles instead of whatever happens to be near them. Plus, you may never see a red eye again, since Coolpix reduces red-eye with a pupil-shrinking pre-flash, and then auto-corrects the red-eye in photos before saving it to memory.

One Tough Little Waterproof Camera

Olympus Stylus 770SW Digital CameraA Camera for All Seasons

Summer is here... and you're looking for a camera that will capture all your summer fun. No, I mean ALL your fun. You want a camera that you can take to the beach, camping in the mountains, to the swimming pool... even IN the swimming pool.

Winter is here... the warm months seem like ancient history and you are looking for a camera that can capture all of your wintertime fun. No, I mean ALL your fun. Your camera must do more than just take indoor holiday shots around a warm fire; it must be able to grab those images of your amigos catching some backside air in the middle of the worst blizzard since 1910.

If this sounds like you, then the Olympus Stylus 770SW is the camera you've been looking for. This all-weather, shockproof, freeze-proof, crush-proof, waterproof digital camera is designed for those who live an active lifestyle, and is rugged enough to survive it.

  • Shockproof camera: For the accident prone, or for those who simply don't know the meaning of "take it easy," the Stylus 770 SW is designed to withstand a drop, bump, grind or hustle, up to 5-feet off the ground. As long as it doesn't fall out of your pocket while you're skydiving, hang gliding or bungee jumping, you should be covered.
  • NessieWaterproof camera: We're not kidding. You can literally take underwater shots with this camera -- down to a depth of 33 feet -- without any kind of special camera case or sealed bag. Olympus has added its innovative waterproof sealant technology to this precision point-and-shoot camera. You can capture still snapshots at the waterpark, in the ocean, or in the pool, and even record underwater movies with sound. Do you want to capture definitive proof that the Loch Ness Monster exists? This cameras will get it for you (as long as Nessie comes to within 10 meters of the surface).
Disclaimer: The picture above was not taken with the Olympus Stylus 770SW
  • Crush-proof: If this camera could talk, it would say "I'll be back" in an Austrian accent. The Stylus 770SW has a stainless steel body and a reinforced LCD, so it can withstand a force up to 220 lbs. of pressure.
  • Freeze-proof: The Olympus 770 SW can perform at below-freezing temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 degrees Celsius). In other words, you will give up (and go inside to get some hot chocolate) before it will.

Oh, yes, it is a digital camera after all. Here are the basic technical specs for those who care. (And you should.)

  • 7.1 effective megapixel CCD image processor
  • Memory: 18MB internal memory, accepts xD-Picture Card up to 2GB
  • 27 shooting modes including Movie with Sound
  • 3x optical & 5x digital zoom; 15x seamless zoom en total
  • Bright, hi-resolution 2.5-inch (6.4cm) HyperCrystal LCD (approx. 230,000 pixels)
  • Digital Image Stabilization
  • Light sensitivity up to ISO 1600
  • Recording formats: Still-JPEG, Video-AVI Motion JPEG, AVI Movie with Sound: 640x480/15fps, SHQ; 320x240/15fps, HQ; 160x120/15fps, SQ
  • Built-in flash

If it wasn't already taken, I would assign the following motto to the rugged and dependable Olympus Stylus 770SW:

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays this little camera from the swift completion its appointed photographs.

Digital Camera Highlights from PMA 2007

With a month's worth of hustle & bustle, events, contests, demos, announcements, and thousands of attendees crammed into four hectic days, the 83rd annual, 2007 PMA International Convention and Trade Show is ready for the history books.

For the consumer, the most interesting news from PMA 2007 is focused around the product announcements; the digital cameras and other photography equipment that you and I can buy off the shelf or order online. This year, there was no shortage of product news. We have previously written about product (and photo workshop) announcements from Panasonic LUMIX, the new digital camera models from Nikon Coolpix, and of course, the new 10.2 megapixel Nikon D40X.

Here are more digital photography and imaging product highlights from PMA 2007:

FujiFilm Digital CamerasThe FujiFilm IS-1 digital camera wins a DIMA Innovative Digital Product Award. The Digital Imaging Marketing Association (DIMA) Innovative Digital Product Awards recognize products or services that are at the forefront of digital imaging technology or the "first of their kind." FujiFilm stated that, "DIMA's recognition of the IS-1 digital camera underscores Fujifilm's commitment to creating unique products and rich new technologies that meet the imaging needs of today's customers."

Fujifilm's IS-1 is the world's first production point-and-shoot digital camera that can capture images in the IR (infrared) range of the light spectrum. Although this camera won't be owned by the average family photographer (the camera is more practical for science labs or law enforcement professionals), we congratulate FujiFilm on pushing the envelope with this unique camera.

New FujiFilm FinePix Digital Cameras: Speaking of FujiFilm, FujiFilm USA, Inc. announced three new consumer models in its line of consumer digital cameras, including the 8-megapixel Finepix A820 and the 9-megapixel A900.

Olympus Digital CamerasNew Olympus Digital Cameras: Not to be left behind, Olympus Imaging America has also announced several new models of high-quality digital cameras for Spring 2007, such as the Olympus EVOLT E410 and the Olympus EVOLT E510.

Olympus E410 SLR Digital CameraBoth digital cameras are advanced digital SLRs that include a dust reduction system; a bright, high-resolution, 2.5 inch, 230,000-pixel HyperCrystal LCD screen; Auto-focus; and a 10-megapixel Live-MOS sensor that lets you preview your shots with all of the nuances of your own overrides and custom settings. The E510 also includes Advanced Image Stabilization.

Other new point-and-shoot Olympus cameras that have been recently announced include:

Olympus Stylus 760 Digital CameraOlympus Stylus 760 Digital Camera: A 7.1-megapixel, 3x optical zoom point 'n shoot that was designed to be used in adverse weather. The camera includes a bright, wide angle, high-resolution, 2.5-inch LCD, dual image stabilization and 26 different shooting modes for video capture and still images. The stylish Olympus 760 comes in four different colors: silver, black, light blue, and pink.

Olympus SP-550UZ Digital CameraOlympus SP-550UZ Digital Camera: The high-speed, 7.1-megapixel, full featured Olympus SP-550UZ offers more features than many digital SLRs, sans the interchangeable lens. Most notably, its wide-angle, 18x super-telephoto lens is the equivalent of a amazing 28-504mm telephoto lens on a 35mm camera. Super-sensitive, the ISO 5000 SP-550UZ will capture images in extremely low-light conditions (or for extremely fast-action photos). Its bright, 230,000-pixel 2.5-inch LCD allows you to review your shots even in bright sunlight, and the dual image stabilization ensures that a shaky hand or a fast-moving subject will be captured with crystal clarity.

Panasonic Workshops Complement Digital Camera Line for 2007

Panasonic LumixPanasonic LUMIX will launch the Digital Photo Academy, a new site and workshop series that will be held in 20 cities around the U.S., beginning in May 2007. The courses will be taught by photographers and experts in their local area, and will primarily focus on teaching owners of digital cameras how to take advantage of all their available features. The goal is to maximize students' creativity, make photography more enjoyable, and -- with additional knowledge and control of their photographic tools -- bring the quality of their digital images to a new level.

The digital photography workshops will offer three levels of courses:

  • Beginner - 3-hour course that covers red-eye reduction, creating scrapbooks and other basic digital photography skills useful even to those who own point-and-shoot digital cameras
  • Intermediate - 4-hour course that emphasizes the accuracy and flexibility of digital SLRs
  • Advanced - 2-day course that covers more advanced, "professional-level" photography skills

Even though the series is sponsored by Panasonic Lumix, attendees do not have to own a Panasonic camera to attend; students are welcome to bring any brand of digital camera to the workshops.

Panasonic Lumix has teamed up with R2Rainmaker Marketing to create the workshop series and to recruit the professional photographers and other photography experts that will serve as instuctors.

The Digital Photo Academy web site is currently under construction, but should be active by late-April 2007. It will allow visitors to view the workshop schedule, access class materials and read profiles of the instructors.

Panasonic Lumix has also been busy on the product side of the house, announcing a long list of new Panasonic Lumix cameras earlier this year.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8KTypical of the high value in the new line is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8K. This camera offers a 7.2-megapixel CCD, Intelligent Image Stabilization, 11-point autofocus, and other features that are usually found in a much more expensive digital SLR. In addition, the camera has a 12x optical zoom Leica lens, which gives the equivalent of a 36mm to 432mm zoom lens in a 35mm film camera. In the DSLR world, a lens with this range will cost several hundred dollars on its own, yet Panasonic is offering the DMC-FZ8K for less than $350.00.

With its new line of Lumix cameras and new workshop series, there can be no doubt that Panasonic is committed to digital photography as an important part of its consumer electronics offerings.

Pre-order the Nikon D40X SLR Digital Camera

Nikon D40X digital SLRMarch 29, 2007 is the official release date of the new Nikon D40X digital camera, but you can preorder this latest DSLR right now at Ritz Camera online.

The Nikon D40X sits halfway between the popular and inexpensive Nikon D40 and the more powerful Nikon D80, both in features and in price. With a body-only price of $730 (est. $800 with a Nikkor 18-55mm lens), the D40X is plenty of camera for a very reasonable price. Its most obvious advantage over its little brother is the 10.2 megapixel CCD - the same as the Nikon D80 - for those who like to blow up their photos to poster size.

Since the number of megapixels is not the most important factor in creating quality digital images (which any experienced photographer knows), Nikon has also migrated many more features down from their higher-end cameras to make both the D40 and the D40X outstanding values:

  • A bright, sharp, 230,000-dot, 2.5-inch, TFT LCD with brightness adjustment and 170-degree viewing angle
  • Nikon's 3D Color Matrix Metering II, with 420-pixel RGB sensor, delivers automatic, dependable and consistent exposure adjustment for almost any lighting condition
  • An advanced, 3-area AutoFocus system that gives fast & precise autofocus
  • An AutoFocus-assist illuminator ensures accurate autofocus even in dark conditions
  • Eight program settings (Auto, Auto w/Flash Off, Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close Up, and Night Portrait) that automatically optimize and adjust tone, color, saturation, hue, white balance and sharpening to match the type of photo being taken
  • Near-instantaneous, 0.18-second power-up gives the ability to capture fleeting moments, even when the digital camera is off
  • Fast bursts, up to 100 JPEG images in a row, at speeds of 2.5 to 3 frames per second
  • Shutter speed control from 30 seconds to 1/4000 second
  • A large, bright viewfinder with 0.8x magnification
  • Fast image data transfer and recording to (SDHC compliant) SD memory cards up to 4GB
  • Rechargeable, long-life Li-ion battery that gives from 450-550 single-frame images before recharging is necessary
  • Built-in Flash, plus full support for Nikon's advanced Creative Lighting System

Black Friday Digital Camera Deals at RitzCamera.com

It's the most wonderful time of the year... for savings on digital cameras and electronics products.

The following is a list of special deals, discounts and special prices for Black Friday and the Thanksgiving weekend, through Sunday, November 26th. With the special prices, Google Checkout holiday promotions, gift cards, rebates and free printer offers, it is possible to save 40% or more on the latest digital cameras, photography equipment and supplies.

Ritz Interactive pays your sales tax, and they also offer free shipping on orders of $100 or more for most photography products, so in many cases the discounted prices shown below are also your out-the-door prices. (Gift certificate numbers are sent via e-mail, so there is no shipping charge attached to them.) NOTE: The free shipping on $100 or more does not apply to consumer electronics products. A $6.95 ground shipping charge typically applies for products in the Ritz Camera electronics store with the exception of large items – like a plasma HDTV – which would have an extra truck deliver charge.

Below are specific deals and special discounts being offered for the Thanksgiving/Black Friday weekend at RitzCamera.com and the other Ritz Interactive photo sites. Some of these prices may last longer – i.e. either extend before or after the holiday weekend – but the prices shown are definitely good from Thursday, November 23 through Sunday, November 26, 2006.

Remember, you pay no sales tax and get free shipping on photo products on orders of $100 or more at RitzCamera.com.

Pre-order the Nikon D40 Now

Nikon D40The new Nikon D40, the "entry level" SLR digital camera is available now for pre-order at RitzCamera.com.

The D40 is a lightweight & compact DSLR that emphasizes ease of use; with 8 preprogrammed settings for different shooting conditions, its simplicity -- combined with the high-quality images captured by the 6.1 megapixel CCD sensor and stored by the advanced Image Processing Engine -- makes this the perfect digital SLR for the photographer migrating up from point 'n shoot cameras. Much of the technology in the more expensive D80 and D200 cameras has trickled down to the Nikon D40... the most obvious being the bright, high-resolution 2.5-inch LCD screen on the back of the camera for viewing your shots and accessing all of the menu options.

The D40 is also speedy. It powers up in 0.18 seconds, has no noticeable shutter lag time, and can take up to 100 shots -- storing them as JPG images -- at 2.5 fps (frames per second).

The Nikon D40 is compatible with all Nikon autofocus AF-S and AF-I Nikkor lenses, and is being sold in a bundle for around $599 with Nikon's Picture Project software and an 18-55mm (3X zoom) lens with quality, advanced Nikkor optics including ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass and aspherical lenses that minimize aberration (distortion) to give you the sharpest images possible.

To learn more about the features and specifications of the new Nikon D40, and to pre-order this inexpensive DSLR (which should be shipping in December 2006), visit the Nikon D40 information page at RitzCamera.com.

Stunning Photos with the Nikon D80

For those of you haven't visited the stunning Nikon site yet, we highly recommend it. Nikon got 16 photographers together for an online and print ad campaign, and gave them a Nikon D80. (Yes, I feel sick, too.) The photographers all contributed images that were taken with the new Nikon DSLR and also took self portraits in a mirror. (It's a little humorous to see the backwards "nokiN" logos in all of the self portrait shots.)

In addition, some of the photographers participated in a more in-depth "documentary" of sorts; the photographers themselves were filmed and interviewed while they put the Nikon D80 through its paces.

Besides the print ads that are now coming out, Nikon has combined the photographers' work with the D80, the self portraits, and the interviews into a Flash site at http://www.stunningnikon.com/dslr/. And while the photos included on this site are great examples of the amazing images that are possible with this camera (not to mention what can be created when you allow a group of extremely talented people loose), the interviews are my favorite part of the StunningNikon site.

Here's why:

The Nikon D80 digital camera is one of our favorite cameras of the year. Not only does it set a new value point for digital SLR's, but the D80 is feature-rich, lightweight, and takes incredible photos. It is truly a pleasure to photograph with, and this is what the Stunning Nikon film clips and the photographers' interviews demonstrate. To watch them photographing -- spying a shot and then snapping away just a couple of seconds later -- is inspiring. It shows that great shots are all around us if we keep our eyes open, and that, with the right camera, even fleeting shots can be captured easily.

Personally, it makes me want to carry my digital cameras everywhere with me.

A Camera for Frequent Family Portraits

Selecting a digital camera these days is not easy. With the wide range of megapixels available, with so many features that appear on some cameras and not others, how does one make a choice? The easiest way may be to envision how you will use the camera most often, and then get the best camera you can for that specific application.

You can find all the latest FujiFilm cameras and accessories at RitzCamera.com

FujiFilm F31fd Front ViewWith that in mind, the FujiFilm F31fd digital camera may be the absolute best choice for the typical, family photographer. In addition to its 6.3 megapixels -- plenty of megapixels for a quality 8x10 blow-up -- the F31fd contains many features perfect for those frequent, personal family portraits.

The fd in F31fd stands for Face Detection, and this is the feature that FujiFilm is touting the most about this camera. Their advanced face detection technology allows the camera to identify up to 10 individual faces in a photo (in as little as 0.05 seconds), and also follow any faces that aren't sitting still until they go beyond the borders of the image. The benefit to your photos is that, with individual faces being identified, the lighting on those areas can be optimized, and the camera makes easy work of zooming in on them for a nearly automated, close-up portrait taken just a second after a more distant shot.

FujiFilm F31fd Back ViewA complementary feature to assist in taking those family portraits is the sensitivity of the FujiFilm F31fd. With light sensitivity up to ISO 3200, this camera can take many photos in low-light conditions that are beyond the reach of most other cameras. So if you're fond of taking pictures at birthday parties with nothing but the candles on the cake lighting the scene, or if you enjoy candld snaps of your family opening their Christmas presents lit only by the lights of the Christmas tree, you should seriously consider this camera. It will be able to capture shots that would otherwise get away, and help you capture them easily.

Even though this camera is more sensitive than most, there will be times when you simply don't have enough ambient light. The FujiFilm F31fd also incorporates "intelligent flash" technology that will light up the scene when necessary. This feature also works well with the face detection technology. That is, if the important faces in the photo are darker than the background, the Intelligent Flash will light them up, creating a much better shot with more evenly balanced lighting.

The FujiFilm F31fd is not available just yet. It is scheduled to come out in December with a price tag somewhere around $399. However, if your family has a person who loves to take those personal family portraits -- and whose doesn't -- the timing is perfect; this cameras would make perfect holiday gift for that relative.

When the FujiFilm F31fd is ready for pre-order, we will announce it here.

Visit Cologne, Compliments of Nikon

Trouble sleeping? Early riser? Use your insomnious hours to visit Photokina 2006 -- virtually, at least -- compliments of Nikon Imaging. Nikon has three, 24-hour, live web cams at the Photokina show in Cologne, Germany. One camera is aimed at the Nikon booth, one at the stage where Nikon is putting on shows throughout the event, and the last at a modeling stage where various photo shoots are scheduled.

To get to the Nikon Photokina web cams, aim your browser at the following (Flash) URL:
http://www.nikon-euro.com/photokina2006/main.php?lang=EN&country=UK

Once you get through the musical intro, click on the "Webcam" link at the bottom of the Flash screen, and the interface will show you a selection of the three cameras.

(Note: Windows Media Player is required to view the web cam feed; the images are transmitted in a Windows Media formatted data stream.)

Also, keep in mind that the Photokina photography trade show is in Germany, which is several hours ahead of anyone living in the United States. Specifically, Cologne is 6 hours ahead of people living on the east coast, and 9 hours ahead of west coast residents. (You people living in the Midwest and the Rocky Mountain states can do the math.) If you log onto these web cams during the middle of a work day, you're bound to see a dark or empty room.

Enjoy your virtual visit to Photokina 2006...

First Vinyl, Then VHS... Now Film?

Just as the digital technology of Compact Discs replaced vinyl LPs and cassettes, and then DVDs replaced VHS tapes, digital cameras are quickly obliterating film cameras as the popular standard in photography.

Over the weekend, CIPA (Camera and Imaging Products Association), a Japanese organization that tracks shipments of digital cameras, has revised their earlier projections of the number of different types of cameras that will be shipped through 2008.

Although demand for digital SLRs are still strong, the numbers for these cameras were revised slightly downward from earlier projections. Sales for digital SLR cameras is expected to be around 5.5 million in 2008.

More surprisingly, the estimates for digital cameras with built-in lenses was raised significantly, while estimates for film camera sales took a nosedive. CIPA now expects the sales of this category of digital camera to exceed 72 million in 2008. Their projection for 35mm and other film cameras was lowered to approximately 98,000 units for all of 2008.

Rain Storm or Dust Storm, The Pentax K10D Doesn't Care

The new Pentax K10D is a rugged, full-featured digital SLR camera for experienced photographers. With a weather-resistant, dust-proof case that includes 72 different seals - including around the shutter release button - to prevent whatever's outside from getting inside, this camera is especially suited for outdoor photography. If dust should happen to get in where the 10.2 megapixel CCD chip resides, Pentax's Dust Removal system comes to the rescue; the combination of its Special Project coating plus the internal, vibrating shift mechanism ensures that no errant piece of dust will make its permanent home on the image sensor.

You can order the Pentax K10D at RitzCamera.com and receive a free photo printer for a limited time.

Other features of the Pentax K10D make it a terrific value. In addition to the 10.2 megapixel sensor, the .95X viewfinder, and 2.5-inch, 210,000-pixel LCD monitor (with 140-degree viewing angle), this digital camera also offers a shake reduction system that helps to keep images steady when using a telephoto lens or in low-light conditions. Unlike some other shake reduction systems, the Pentax system does not need a special lens to work.

The K10D also includes an 11-point auto-focus (AF) system with both static and continuous auto-focus. And as with all Pentax digital SLRs, it is compatible with any Pentax lens produced. As an added bonus, the Pentax K10D is eligible for the Toyota FJ Cruiser giveaway that we wrote about previously: Any eligible person that takes a Pentax K-series digital SLR for an online/in-person test drive and then fills out the contest entry form before December 31, 2006, may win a new Toyota SUV in the drawing in January 2007.

The Pentax K10D digital SLR should be shipping this November with an expected price of around $900 (body only), just in time for the holidays. (This would definitely be a heartwarming Christmas present for that advanced photographer on your shopping list.) Ordering the Pentax K10D is possible now; at RitzCamera.com you can buy the Pentax K10D with a 18-55mm lens for a special bundle price..

Test Drive a Pentax SLR - Cruise Home in a New Toyota

Pentax Imaging is inviting you to test drive a Pentax DSLR, and one lucky participant is going to drive home in a brand new Toyota FJ Cruiser.

From now until the end of the year - you must enter by December 31, 2006 - Pentax is running a contest: Any eligible person* that test drives a Pentax K series SLR digital camera, either online or in person at an authorized reseller, can register into the drawing to win the Toyota SUV.

Even without the contest, the Pentax K100D should definitely be considered if you are looking to buy a new digital camera. The reasonably-priced Pentax K-series cameras are high-quality digital SLRs that offer many of the advanced features as other DSLRs that cost much more. With a 6.1 megapixel CCD sensor and a bright 2.5-inch LCD monitor, the cameras offer very good image resolution for the serious digital photographer. The Pentax DSLRs also allow continuous mode shooting at 2.8 frames per second, light sensitivity up to ISO 3200, shutter speeds up to 1/4000th of a second, 11-point autofocus, and presets that allow you to choose the type of photo you are taking with the turn of a knob. The advanced anti-shake system receives focal length information directly from the Pentax F, FA, D-FA and DA lenses, and helps steady the image while moving the camera or for low-light photos. Speaking of lenses, previous Pentax owners will be pleased to know that the Pentax K-series DSLRs are compatible with any Pentax lens ever made.

New Digital Cameras from Sony for the Fall

Autumn is just around the corner... just in time for the Chrismas/holiday shopping season, Sony Electronics announced couple of new digital cameras; it's no surprise that one of them is a compact camera with 10-plus megapixels. (It's just further evidence that 10+ megapixels is becoming the new baseline for digital cameras.)

The Sony DSC-N2 is an evolution of the DSC-N1, and keeps the 3-inch touch screen display, the "pocket album" capability (which allows you to store up to 500 VGA-resolution images in the camera itself), the "slide show" display mode, and the Carl Zeiss zoom lens. The main upgrade is the CCD sensor, which is rated at 10.1 megapixels, up from the 8.1 of the DSC-N1. Another feature of note is the ISO 1600 capability of the Sony N2, which will help remove the blur when taking photos of moving subjects or for taking pictures without a flash in a low-light environment.

The DSC-T50 was also announced today, which is a sleek and very stylish compact camera that looks like it will fit nicely into a small handbag or shirt pocket. It also offers image stabilization, which is always useful in a compact camera.

Both models should ship sometime in October, and be available for pre-order a little later this month.

2006-2007 EISA Digital Camera Awards

The European Imaging and Sound Association, EISA, is an organization of editorial, multimedia magazines, specializing in the areas of Audio, Mobile Electronics, and Video and Photography. Its membership currently consists of 50 magazines from 20 European countries.

From all of the photography products introduced in the past twelve months, EISA members come together and vote on the best products in several categories.

This year's award winners for photography products are:

Best Professional Camera: Canon EOS 5D
The Canon EOS 5D is the first full-frame sensor, SLR digital camera available for an affordable price. Its effective 12.8 megapixels, together with the full-frame sensor, allows photographers to make large digital prints without sacrificing image quality. Furthermore, photographers can take advantage of a bright viewfinder and shallow depth of field. It is an excellent, full-featured camera for both professionals, semi-professionals and serious amateurs that can afford the price.

The Canon EOS 5D can be purchased at Ritz Camera online at:
http://www1.ritzcamera.com/?location=CO0001&prp=541161493&tmlpse=true

Best Consumer Camera: Sony Alpha 100
With its 10 megapixel CCD sensor, the popular Sony Alpha 100 has taken a large leap into the digital SLR market. The Sony Alpha has very useful functions like Super SteadyShot (which reduces camera shake) and an Anti-Dust System, which operates every time the camera is turned off. The Alpha's Bionz image engine reduces noise and improves color and detail reproduction, and a Dynamic Range Optimizer is provided for better backlight shots in poor lighting conditions. The Sony Alpha 100 is the first entry of the Sony DSLR system that includes more than 20 different lenses and a wide range of accessories.

The Sony Alpha 100 can be purchased at Ritz Camera online at:
http://www1.ritzcamera.com/?location=CO0001&prp=542083746&tmlpse=true

Best Compact Camera: Samsung NV10
The Samsung NV10 is another of the 10+ megapixel cameras that have been announced in 2006. It is the flagship of a new series of truly robust, compact cameras from Samsung that include a new design concept called 'blue ring.' The Samsung offers the highest level of image quality currently offered on a compact camera, along with a new, practical interface. It’s equipped with a 10.1 million-pixel CCD sensor, a Schneider-Kreuznach 3x optical zoom, an ani-shake system and a bright 2.5-inch LCD monitor. All this is enclosed in an attractive slim, black aluminum body.

The Samsung NV10 can be purchased at Ritz Camera online at:
http://www1.ritzcamera.com/?location=CO0001&prp=545440844&tmlpse=true

Best European Camera: Nikon D200
The Nikon D200 is a semi-professional DSLR with a 10.2 megapixel CCD that sets a new standard in 2006. The D200 satisfies both the advanced amateur and the professional photographer with its wide range of advanced features. The balance between noise, sharpness, dynamics and true color reproduction is optimized for the quality image processing desired by professional photographers.

Digital Cameras: 10-plus Megapixels the New Standard?

Almost every recent digital camera-related news story seems to announce another 10.1, 10.2, 10.4 or greater megapixel camera.

In early August, Nikon announced the D80 DSLR, with its sub-$1000 price tag for a full featured, professional level digital SLR with 10.2 megapixels and a bright 2.5-inch LCD.

Two weeks later, Canon announced the Digital Rebel XTi (aka 400D), also containing a double-digit image sensor (10.1 megapixels) and a 2.5" LCD. Although not including quite as many bells and whistles, the price tag is even more attractive than Nikon's newest.

The Sigma SD14 -- which will be officially announced in September during Photokina in Colonge, Germany -- will also certainly sport a 10+ megapixel sensor that is purported to be more color sensitive than current technology.

It's not only the digital SLR's that are pushing the ceiling. Many major camera manufacturers have recently announced user-friendly, point-n-shoot new digital camera models that have jumped the 10-megapixel limit.

Here are some examples:

* The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 digital camera is not a DSLR, but with its unique look, large lens and 2-inch LCD monitor, it offers a very high quality image for the amateur photographer who does not need the flexibility of interchangeable lenses.

* The easy-to-use Casio EX-Z1000 offers 10.1 megapixels, long battery life, anti-shake signal processor, and the unique "optimized for eBay" feature, which allows the photographer to take product photos optimized to upload to eBay without having to resize or compress them first.

* This month Canon revealed the Powershot A640, their first A-series point 'n shoot that includes a 10.0 megapixel sensor, a 2.5" LCD monitor and 640x480 movie recording.

* Today BenQ announced the C1000 with a 10.1 megapixel CCD chip, a 2.4" LCD, a shutter speed up to 8 seconds, and VGA moview recording.

Is 10+ megapixels the new standard for image quality in digital cameras?

Sigma Teases

The big news in the digital camera blogosphere today was the pre-announcement announcement of the Sigma SD-14. We're not going to talk about it... know why? Because there is currently nothing to talk about.

Jumping on the Nikon D80 rumor and speculation bandwagon that occurred when pre-release photos of the D80 were (supposedly *coff* *coff*) "leaked," Sigma's strategy for the next month is to build the buzz and tease us with hints as to what might be coming in the new Sigma DSLR. (http://www.sigma-sd14.com/)

Check back with us on or around September 26th, when we'll see if the new Sigma SD14 is truly offering "fundamentally better technology," or if it was only a tease.

Unique Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames

One of the things we like best about working for a large online retailer is being able to see all the cool gadgets and accessories before they become commonplace. I am certain that one of the hot - and most unique - photography gifts this upcoming Christmas/holiday season is going to be a digital picture frame.

Currently, digital picture frames are typically priced from approximately $100 and up, depending on which bells and whistles catch your fancy. The two most common types of digital frames are 1) those you plug your photo memory cards into, and 2) those that can communicate wirelessly or via phone cord.

For example, Edge Tech Corp sells a stylish, digital picture frame with a built-in MP3 player. (The music can be heard through the integrated speakers or privately via the earphone jack.) So not only can you see a slideshow of your favorite private photos, but you can play background music at the same time to set the mood.

The Edge frame accepts several different types of memory cards:
  • SD Memory Cards
  • MultiMedia (MMC) Cards
  • Memory Stick
  • Memory Stick Pro
  • IBM Microdrive
  • Type I/II Compact Flash Cards
The device is Plug n Play, so all you have to do is insert the memory card and start your show. You can set the display times and transition effects, and the Edge picture frame comes with a credit card-sized remote control for manual control when the digital slideshow is running.

(Note: Edge Tech is offering a $40 rebate on digital picture frames purchased from 8/1/06 to 9/30/06. You can download the rebate form here in Adobe PDF format. Click here if you need the latest Adobe reader.)

Another interesting type of digital picture frame is offered by Ceiva Logic. It does not require you to plug in a physical card or transfer your photos from a computer. Instead, the digital frame is live; that is, via a phone line or Ceiva's wireless adapter, anyone with permission can upload photos to your frame. You could literally wake up in the morning and see new photos being displayed that friends or family have sent to you from an event the night before. (It's the next best thing to being there.)

Ceiva Logic can also upload content. The Ceiva Network subscription service provides current content from ABC News, Weather Channel and ESPN.

The true uniqueness of giving a digital picture frame as a gift is in its personalization. Imagine giving this for Christmas, a birthday or a wedding, and then uploading photographs of the good times to the recipient shortly thereafter. Rather than just giving a digital picture frame to a new bride and groom, your present could be an entire digital wedding album.

For these and other digital picture frames, you can visit RitzCamera.com (who is graciously sponsoring this site) or other online retailers.

First Look: Nikon D80 Digital Camera

The new Nikon D80 digital SLR could just be the digital camera value of the year. Built for both professional photographers and serious amateurs, Nikon has taken the lion's share of the impressive digital technology from the extremely popular D2X and Nikon D200, and then cut over 40% off of the D200's street price.

Along with the speculation and pre-release rumors that accompanied the announcement of the D80 in early August 2006, some early reviews have claimed the Nikon D80 SLR digital camera is basically an upgrade to the D70s. While this is one way to look at it, in reality the Nikon D80 is much closer to the D200. The most notable and obvious features should place the D80 at the top of this year's Christmas list for any serious photographer. With a 10.2 megapixel CCD chip and Nikon's high-res image processor, this camera can render and store high-quality images fast. In fact, the Nikon D80 can take continuous shots at 3 fps for up to 100 frames in sequence. The bright, 2.5-inch LCD screen with 170-degree viewing angle allows easy review of photos, even when the DSLR isn't directly in front of the photographer.
